Bethesda shows Prey 2 screenshot, concept art

At a slow but steady pace, details about the upcoming sequel to Prey are trickling out. This time, Bethesda has posted the first public screenshot of the game as well as a concept art piece, which shows what looks like a vast alien city. The screenshot is just as interesting, revealing some character designs and art direction that both look like departures from the first title:

The different look is fitting, because we learned last month that Prey 2 will feature a new character and new gameplay mechanics, including parkour-like chases. The people at BeefJack have also reported that the sequel won’t include portals or variable gravity like the first game. Prey 2‘s lead designer was quoted as saying, "I really wanted to shift away from making it too much of a puzzle game." (Thanks to Joystiq for the links.)

Upscaled console screenshot FTL. Wake me up when they post a detailed PC screenshot.

Sounds like a fail to me – the reality-bending space/time/gravity shenanigans were a big part of what made the first game great – that and all the dark cinematic sequences. Looks like a bar fight on Deep Space Nine 🙁

It’s a good thing Odo went back to the gamma quadrant. We all know how strict he was about weapons on the Promenade.

Not interested. Sounds like another worthless sequel.

Sounds like this game is a sequel in name only.

Whats the point of a Prey game without the portals and funky gravity… Thats what made the original stand out from the crowd.

hmm…they said variable gravity, but not changing gravity (i.e. walking on walls and such). that was a cool effect i thought. i didn’t think prey was much of a puzzle game, so i’m not sure what to make of that last quote. i guess just run-and-gun?

artwork reminds of older jedi knight games…heh.

Agree. Prey was awesome because of the way that it made you never know which way you were going, up or down, right or left. It’s a shame they aren’t being true to the original game’s game mechanics.

      I have to agree…:(
Prey 1 was great and the innovative gameplay was really captivating. They either introduce other interesting elements, or I’ve lost part of the interest I had in Prey 2!

For a SP only game it looks really old. Hope they don’t expect 50-60 dollar for that.
