Movies adapted from video games are generally pretty poor. However, movies about video games can be pretty good. The King of Kong is a great example. This documentary on high-level Donkey Kong players has received critical acclaim and should really be watched by anyone who has dropped more than a few quarters in an old-school arcade.
I never played much Donkey Kong, but I have spent countless hours immersed in Tetris. Perhaps that's why the trailer for Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters speaks to me.
The movie follows the world's best Tetris players as they prepare for the world championship. Perhaps the most poignant line in the trailer comes near the end, when one of the players states: "it's going to be a great experience to be in a room full of people who are great at this game." As a decent and probably lifelong Tetris player, it's going to be great to watch a movie about people who are much, much better at the game than I am. Thanks to Joystiq for the tip.
