Everything else is high spec, so why are they using that old SoC?

Probably because when they defined the phone specs [b<]two years ago[/b<] A9-based chips weren't out yet... EDIT: Or, they were going to use Medfield, but its power consumption turned out to be too high, and at the last minute the only things available where their own old inventory of A8 chips

[quote<]DigiTimes reports foundries seeing slower growth in wafer starts for 3Q11, say sources[/quote<] "Contract chipmakers Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) have seen their clients cut back on wafer starts for the third quarter of 2011, due to weaker-than-expected demand for handsets and tablet PCs, according to industry sources." Four possible explanations: A) GloFo chips are taking over handset and tablet PC markets B) Intel chips are taking over handset and tablet PC markets C) Samsung chips are taking over handset and tablet PC markets D) Handset and tablet PC markets are shrinking heavily. I personally don't believe in D.

      You forgot E & F & G

E – people have 3 of everything and are not buying any more gadgets.
F – people are spending their money on other things
G – a lot of buyers are in Japan and they are still recovering from the tsunami
