Rage PC requirements are surprisingly tame

Past id Software games had a reputation for making PCs sweat, but Rage could be different. Bethesda has revealed system requirements for the PC version of the title, and they're surprisingly tame. See for yourself:

  • OS: Win XP SP3, Vista, Win 7
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo or Equivalent AMD
  • Memory: 2GB
  • Hard Disk Space: 25GB
  • Video Card: GeForce 8800, Radeon HD 4200

  • OS: Win XP SP3, Vista, Win 7
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad or Equivalent AMD
  • Memory: 4GB
  • Hard Disk Space: 25GB
  • Video Card: GeForce 9800 GTX, ATI Radeon HD 5550

The GeForce 9800 GTX might have sat firmly at the high end when it came out three years ago, but today, $100 cards deliver higher performance. As for the Core 2 Quad or AMD equivalent, well, quad-core Athlon IIs have been selling under $100 for quite a while.

Rage seems a tad more demanding on the memory front. Bethesda recommends 4GB of RAM, whereas recent, high-profile titles like Deus Ex: Human Revolution are purportedly content with only 2GB. My guess is Rage's megatexture technology, which paints the game world with a single, giant texture, can benefit from the extra system RAM. 8GB memory kits now retail for just over 40 bucks, though, so that's not quite a cause for concern.

Rage is still scheduled to debut on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on October 4.
