Nvidia’s ‘A New Dawn’ brings back the nymph

Roughly a decade ago, Nvidia introduced a new graphics chip called the NV30, and it wasn’t exactly a rousing success. Despite a bundle of hype about the potential of DirectX 9-class capabilities to advance real-time graphics—much of it justified, it turns out—Nvidia’s first attempt at a DX9 chip was late to market, ran too hot, and couldn’t keep pace with the excellent Radeon 9700. Heck, we called it a disappointment before it even reached the market, once we got a look at the card design, saying: "Who knew Nvidia would stick a Dustbuster to the side of its next-gen graphics card in order to cool the GPU to where it could reach clock speeds higher than the Radeon 9700?" That remark earned us the right to buy our review card on eBay, which eventually led to our first review featuring results from a digital sound level meter. That puppy was loud!

One bright spot in the GeForce FX mess, though, was the real-time graphics demo Nvidia created for the product launch, featuring a nymph/fairy character known as Dawn. The graphics in it were ground-breaking, and in a breathtaking display of fan service, the scantily clad Dawn had sliders for shader effects like "oily skin" and "goosebumps," causing us to present this version of her in our FX review:

Cinematic graphics: Lubed up and a bit chilly

Had to be done.

Now, 10 years later, Dawn has returned in a new demo made for the Kepler GPU launch. Called simply "A New Dawn," this demo shows how far the possiblities for fan service in real-time graphics have advanced over time:

Honestly, the video doesn’t come close to doing it justice; the compression kills the detail. I’m running the demo now on a dual-GTX 680 rig at 2560×1600, and the detail is incredible—particularly on her hair and face. If you have a GTX 600-series graphics cards, you can check out the real thing yourself by downloading it here. It’s guaranteed to make you shake your fist and unleash an old-man shout at the relatively weak graphics in the last few crops of Xbox ports.

On my single 560ti the demo is too heavy for it, HILARIOUSLY what happens is her leaves turn into meshes…

I guess the kiddies don’t know that the chimp tech demo is what ATI paired against the original “Dawn” demo.

BTW, a minor nitpick on the article itself. It was actually nine years ago not ten. Close, but no cigar.

The ATI girl Ruby at least has that independent and bad ass vibe… this nymph is basically just a sex toy for male fantasies… i disapprove.

That being said… the hair does look really good, as well as the other things. I would love for games to look like this but my main concern is that content from a tech demo seldom makes it into an actual game.

Can’t wait for MMORPG games to finally get such level of graphical and animation details… Probably not in my lifetime, though, especially with such painfully slow gaming console hardware progress (which has impact on EVERYTHING gaming-related) and lazy, greedy MMORPG developers relying on 3rd-party, poorly optimized and visually unimpressive game engines (I’m looking at you, Bioware/EA!)

“If you have a GTX 600-series graphics cards…”

Actually it runs on my 580, so maybe as long as you have a recent Nvidia card, you can check it out. At 1080p it runs quite nicely for me :-). Quite a large file though at over 770 MB. I guess that’s why games don’t have that level of detail….yet.

It is an embarrassing design flaw of the male brain that T&A-based sales pitches never, ever get old. We are so easily exploited. It’s as if we had an admin user account to our brains set up with no password.

This is one reason women will eventually rule the world.

You know, not all guys are so enthralled with sex they’re compromise all morals and do anything just to get their dick wet. I’m going to assume since you don’t think that, you’re one that still does. Most mature past that stage, even if sex is still appealing. Then again there are a lot of women that don’t mature past the emotionally unstable drama driven teen stage too.

Honestly, there are reasons why women aren’t, generally, in charge today. As with every generalization, that doesn’t always apply, but it does for the majority. Both sexes have their weakness and both can overcome them if they so choose.

    Hair simulation is, again, off.

The animation itself is always the problem, and I’m not sure if it’s generally the computer’s fault, or simply the designer’s reluctance to enable jerking motions. In the video, hair is too “flowy”, no sudden reactions to wind at all. As if that hair is underwater, or something.

    Otherwise decent, I guess.

In an unexpected show of irony, the eyes display almost-believable nystagmus, which is a commendable reality factor again missing from most computer graphics. Its absence is particularly jarring when playing FPS RPGs, where you frequently talk to characters up close.

Yes there is free cam and my 560tis in sli might get 20fps. But that is with 8xaa and 16x af. Still enough power to check it out….perhaps it is not optimized for 560tis in sli ill have to try it with sli disabled to see if performance is the same.

Its interesting in free cam to notice her G/ lady area is blinking a interesting golden color and looks to be in the correct spot:)

I would not have noticed it if Nvidia did not make it blink like a landing light…hehehe

There is already a GTX660Ti level card called MSI TwinFrozr HD7950 that overclocks to 1.1ghz and matches a GTX680 in performance, all for $310 with a great after market cooler and free games. No point in waiting another month for the mythical/magical GTX660 series and its possible crippled 1.5GB of VRAM:

[url<]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127667[/url<] The chance of a GTX660Ti card for $299 to have the same 35% overclocking headroom is pretty much nil since NV wouldn't want to cannibalize GTX670/680's sales. This card might be slightly faster than a stock HD7950, but that's about all it'll have going for it.

        • Phishy714

Just like the 670 didn’t cannibalize the 680 sales right?

        oh wait..

        gotta <3 fanboys..

          • BestJinjo

$400-430 after market 670s performing as well a stock GTX680 is not the same as a $299 GTX660Ti OCed performing close to the GTX680. Funny how you call me a fanboy for no reason when I recommended a great card for $310. I guess I’ll see you next month during reviews. Feel free to tell me if my recommendation was wrong then. I am looking forward to benchmarks of 1.1ghz HD7950 vs. an overclocked GTX660Ti and comparing the quality of the cooler/PCB to that MSi TwinFrozr III card. Also, if that GTX660Ti only has 1.5GB of VRAM, we’ll see who is a real fanboy here.
