TR BBQ IX’s unprecedented prize haul unveiled

We’ve already told you about the fact that the ninth annual TR BBQ event will be taking place this year on August 11, on the scenic shores of Lake Michigan. If the prospect of sandy beaches, good food, good people, and good fun isn’t enough to entice you to join us, then perhaps you need to see the record haul of goodies we’ll be giving away to TR BBQ attendees this year.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of MSI, Corsair, and Gigabyte, we have a very nice collection of brand-new, top-shelf PC hardware to give away. Two of us from the TR staff, TR biz guy Adam Eiberger and me, will be trucking the prizes up to the event and handing them out in person. Our goal is to make sure no one goes away empty-handed.

The list of loot is extensive. Let me give you a sense of it.

We’ll start with the folks from Gigabyte, who have kicked in a trio of motherboards: the GA-Z77X-D3H, the GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3, and the Llano-ready GA-A75-D3H.

As you can see, these boards are enthusiast-class products loaded with more USB ports than a whole stack of MacBooks.

Not to be outdone, MSI has offered up an eclectic mix of hardware that includes one of those sweet, sweet open-air cases we use for our test rigs in Damage Labs:

You’ll have to supply your own components, of course. Speaking of which, we’ll also be giving away an MSI Z77A-GD65 mobo. This board anchors my Ivy Bridge CPU test rig, and it has been exemplary in regular use.

That’s not all, though. We have five MSI Kinzu gaming mice….

…and five MSI Big Bang Xpower II USB flash drives, five MSI T-shirts, and two very handsome MSI gaming backpacks.

I believe that’s 22 total prizes so far, and we haven’t even gotten to the folks at Corsair, who have provided some of the highlights of the prize haul in the form of an HX1050 power supply unit, an M90 mouse, a K90 keyboard, and a Vengeance 2000 wireless gaming headset. Warm up your scroll wheel and behold:

These are some of the best components money can buy, folks.

We tend to give out prize hardware for all sorts of random things, but the very best prizes are generally decided by the baggo/cornhole tournament. If coordination and manual dexterity aren’t your things, well, you still might take home the coolest treasure in the bunch. For the, uh, "most worthy" person who conforms to the ideal of utterly failing to toss the bag into the hole, Dr. Fish has acquired an amazing trophy, which he has graciously named after yours truly. Ladies and gents, behold the Wasson Cup:

Brief pause here, please.  I’m speechless.

Thanks.

Ok, moving on, we will also be handing out a limited supply of TR shirts and swag, in addition to everything else. I think nearly everyone got shirts last year, and we had a new batch made. These are nice, quality T-shirts with the TR logo embroidered on them. We don’t sell these things online anymore, so you have to show up in order to get one.

If you’d like a chance to snag some of this loot, all you have to do is make your way to the BBQ site in Holland, Michigan on August 11th. All of the info is in the forum thread, and all we ask is that you RSVP in that thread if you plan to show up. The BBQ is an amazing event full of quality people, even without all of the prizes. I can pretty much guarantee any TR reader or PC hardware enthusiast will come away with memories that trump a new motherboard or PSU. Hope to see you there!

You know, I think a certain break-away splinter group might hold their own TR bar-b-que, maybe somewhere on the East Coast, complete with their own swag….

    Stay tuned, gerbils, stay tuned…..

Not one of the other prizes ever truly has any hope of holding up to the Wasson Cup! Truly a prize worthy [u<]only[/u<] of the worthiest gerbil out there.

You can keep the shirts, as they won’t fit Me, but I’d take the backlit keyboard in its place…

I can appreciate your reluctance, but the Deliverance initiation for new attendees only lasts about 10 minutes.

[quote<]We have five MSI Kinzu gaming mice....[/quote<] Is MSI just rebranding Steelseries' mice, or is this a typo, or... what?

I think you’re right. I just received all these goodies today, and the mice are almost certainly Steelseries.

Great Job Scott, Adam, and drfish.
I was working on trying to bring a prize to top all of those, but some of the funding fell thru 🙂
Keep you fingers crossed though, since I am still working on it.

    9 days and counting everyone.

      Yes.

On a related noted, is anyone else here about eight inches tall? Because it’s been real hard to meet people of similar stature.

On a slight tangent, at the annual American Homebrewers Association conferences there’s a traveling trophy for the homebrew club that brings the most kegs of beer to the conference. It’s a beer tap… made out of a urinal. Pics [url=http://beerobsessed.com/blog/?tag=aha<]here[/url<] (scroll to the bottom). About 10 years ago when the conference was held here in the Chicago area one of the local homebrew clubs built it and started the tradition. And this is not even close to being the tackiest thing I've seen at the AHA conferences... 😀

I know. I’ve wanted one of those since I first saw them here.

I’ve never looked again since way back then. Can you buy those anywhere now?

EDIT: I looked again. As of April, TR said it wasn’t a commercial product, and I didn’t see anything in a brief search that seemed like this had changed. Bummer. Come on, MSI! Sell these. They can’t be that expensive to make and you can probably charge a premium for them. I’d buy one if they’re not insane-expensive.

Nice set of prizes! Too bad I live quite a bit further away than would be reasonable for a trip…
