Reuters: Seagate cuts current-quarter revenue estimate on weak demand

Wow, you mean charging $100+ for a 1TB drive is going to dampen demand a bit?

      • k00k

This. I haven’t bought anything with a hard drive since the Thailand flooding, what with 1TB HDD prices still almost twice the pre-flood prices.

You can find WD 1 TB Blues for $89.99 on Newegg. You can also find WD Blacks with a 5 year warranty for $119.99 on sale. Before the flood, the pricing was around $99.99. The prices in many cases aren’t double. You need to look at current prices and take advantage of regular sales.

I filled a server with 1.5TB Seagates for $88each THREE YEARS AGO. They are JUST NOW getting back to that price.

[quote<]VR-Zone: Apple recruiting former Google employees to make amend for faulty iOS 6 Maps app[/quote<] Just hope they don't screw it up as bad as Google does in my neck of the woods. As I mentioned in another thread on the maps, the imagery and accuracy of the iOS maps are far better then Google Maps imagery in my area. For example the image of my farm. Even though Google claims the imagery is from 2012 it is at least 10 years older then that. I can tell this by the water levels in the sample map of my farm. Hell if I followed googles road I would be 12 feet under water. [url<]http://imageshack.us/a/img109/4141/ios6vsgmaps.png[/url<]

I don’t feel so bad being in Timmins Ontario now 🙂

      *googles Alvena*

Holy crap it’s further north than Moosonee Ontario, now I really feel good, thanks 🙂

However I guess you commute to Saskatoon everyday?

Strictly a grain farm nowdays so during the “no snow” months it’s live on the farm and commute since it is just a 20 minute drive. During the winter, I live in the city. Don’t think I could stand living in the city 365 days a year.

Used to live in Birch Hills as a kid and that was even further north.

Google Maps is obviously more updated for over here. Because for one thing, it shows that the area is hilly. In the iOS maps it shows that the same area is a small valley.

If someone were to ride a bike to my house and just follows the iOS maps he’ll be quite surprised that he’d have to CLIMB up along the main road, turn right and then climb up a bit again through the street to our house, and not actually let “gravity do the work” of just bringing him “down” to the “valley”.

I know you love Apple but this is going pretty far, are you really willing to give Apple that much of a pass on the maps fiasco? Because the road turns a little bit differently outside your house? That’s a huge difference from locating cities in different continents, or addresses in the middle of rivers. Cars aren’t driven by the map anyway, they aren’t robot cars from the future, a small variation in the bend of a road is easily compensated for by the driver…unless you’re suggesting drivers follow longitude and latitude precisely when following directions.

All GPS navigation apps have their problems which stem from sparse or approximate data from the available suppliers. When modeling a natural surface as big as developed terra firma with relatively small computing and distribution resources, this is bound to happen.

Satnav users from long experience are well acquainted with current limitations in the art. Most would not be convinced by the hysterics surrounding this latest manufactured “fiasco”. At least no more than that of so many Garmin /TomTom /Magellan /Google /Microsoft /DeLorme / mapping issues over the years. Or more broadly, the iPhone location “debacle” and iPad3 overheating “fiasco”. Or even those hoary old Iraq “disaster” and global warming “catastrophe” memes. Or any other fashionably bad news the media spin up for slow news days.

So Apple now has a part in this chronic industrywide problem, but it’s being overblown. It’s a “fiasco” only when narrowly viewed only against the unrealistic expectations many had. That said, many hope that a tech champion would someday deliver a perfectly well-correlated geographic model. What Apple (and Google previously) did achieve was really great advances in visualization and route planning as well as navigation UI. They should consider licensing and integrating TomTom’s crowdsourced map corrections and route optimization systems.

lol considering we’re a third world country, GPS navigation apps are hard to come by unless you buy a dedicated device, or you include it as an option in the car itself. But using your phone as a substitute? Good luck with that. It would be just the same as using an actual paper map.

nokia had solid (enough) maps for malawi. i was pleasantly surprised.

that being said, i’m trying to get some warranty work done, and nokia are being dicks about it. bad enough i might not purchase anything from them again. including the 920. i’ll let you know when it’s resolved.

Spoken like a city slicker. Have you ever tried to back up 90 feet of diamond harrows? Have you ever been on a custom farming crew? Have you ever tried to buy or sell land parcels? Having fairly recent imagery is fairly important in this day and age. Fact is that all mapping systems do have their errors and Google Maps is far from being perfect. This is why the trucking industry does not trust the likes of Google Maps and go for more accurate options such as PC-Miler.

idk. i use nokia drive on my phone, and it works superbly. you should know that i don’t do any real stuff, so have no way to actually tell which is better.
but, for arguments sake, please link the bing maps data. i’d be interested to see the difference. it’ll help your SSK is dumb argument too.

Guru3D’s EVGA SuperNOVA NEX1500 Classified PSU review:
[url<]http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/evga_nex15500_classified_psu_supernova_review,1.html[/url<] is the correct link. I'd prefer it if you did not post links to PSU reviews that don't at least show a few pictures of the innards. If they can't be bothered to at least pop off the chassis cover for a review, they should not be given promotion.
