Etc.

Hmm. So did any of you do the Black Friday thing? I see Walmart and Best Buy had door-buster deals for $179 laptops. The Walmart one is a 15" laptop with a 320GB hard drive and a DVD burner, but it comes with a super low-end AMD C-series processor. So it’s like a really big, heavy netbook. I don’t think you could pay me $179 to keep one of those in inventory around here. But then my computing needs involve making calculations from time to time.

Any other decent deals out there? I’m already all over the Steam sale, of course.

I picked up Transformers: Fall of Cybertron and Dishonored on Steam for 30 bucks each.

So far the Transformers game is a blast to play and the story is just Transformers porn. Metroplex knows how to make an entrance.

Quick take of my Friday shopping circuit:

Home Depot: pretty much the same deals as every year, although there were more specials on the higher-end 18V cordless drills. The usual $50, 3-gallon compressor was available and as usual, it was an oil-free design, so don’t try to open a tire shop with that one.

OfficeMax: nothing big this year, same $80, 7″ no-name Android tablet as everyone else…if you cared to get there at 6am, before the limited stock was completely wiped out. But you can get those for $100 year-round anyway. Alternately, buy a Kindle Fire before noon on Friday, bet a $25 store gift card.

Sears Grand: Appeared to have been ravaged by wolves. They did have it mostly cleaned and restocked by Saturday, though.

Walmart: Black Friday section appeared to have vanished into a small, localized black hole, leaving the surrounding stocks unscathed beyond normal browsing. That, I was not expecting.

Lowe’s: Home Depot, but with a blue tint. They even had the exact same special on a DeWalt 18V cordless drill.

Office Depot: Some decent sales on USB flash drives and wireless mice, otherwise nothing compelling.

Best Buy: Somebody did their homework, because although the place was in Hurricane Sandy mode, they had a virtually endless stock of store-brand (Insignia) flatscreens just in case you missed the brand-name specials and needed a consolation prize.

Didn’t make it to Target or RadioShack. Suspect I didn’t miss much except maybe an RC car special or something.

For $179, that C-Series laptop seems like a fair deal to me. Probably won’t blow the Pentium 4 out of the water, but hey, it’s still probably faster than my Samsung tablet at general tasks. But the more glaring question I have is, what is the laptop’s brand? If it’s even an Acer or an MSI, I could take it. If it’s some cheap knockoff from Shenzhen, no thanks.

Bought one of those blu ray players that were part of wall marts 10pm sale for $38. After i got it, i was able to look up the actual model number (they didn’t include that in their ads). The thing sells for $44 regular price…..glad i wasted my time

I haven’t been all that impressed with the black friday deals – at least up here in Canada. Nothing has made me want to jump up and run for the store. Even the Steam sales haven’t really tempted me because I had such a backlog of good games I haven’t yet played (purchased during last year’s steam sales!).

    But,

This probably isn’t the best place for this, I know. But, I have a Grey Saturday deal for a fellow gerbil. Due to a variety of circumstances, I have an XFX Radeon 6950, 2GB Double Dissipation version for sale. It’s about the equivalent performance of a 7850. Check the TR reviews. I bought it in June, so it’s only been used for 4.5 months, works fine and still under warranty. I’ll give you my NCIX receipt. $100, + whatever it costs to ship it to you. I’m in BC, so fellow Canadians might have a cheaper shipping rate.

**oh yeah, I’ll send it in the original box etc, and throw in the FarCry2 coupon that it came with (I had already played thru that game). **

Apologies for the post if this is considered inappropriate.

Black Friday is for the birds.

I don’t understand why people go through such silly lengths and hassles to get a ~10-20% clearance sale on store opening. It is all luxury goods for crying out loud not essentials.

    Talk about priorities.

      • Meadows

Idiot. It’s 20% off EXPENSIVE luxury goods. It matters.

        • Krogoth

You clearly don’t understand how the retail industry works.

Black Friday is a media frenzy scam. It is the epitome of mindless consumerism. The stuff that is on “sale” is crap that nobody really needs. The owners are only ones that are laughing their way to the bank.

Cheaper is cheaper and apparently many people have money to spend on “luxury goods”. Me thinks it’s a good time to buy. For example i saw yesterday Bitdefender licenses sold for all 2013 models at the same lowered price. If you were in the market for a measely AV you could have bought now the Total Protection version. That sounds like a good deal to me.

Any word on that graphics card perf update you’ve been talking about for a month now? I’d really like to pick up that $210 HD 7870 on the Egg, but I can’t bring myself to do it just yet – mostly because of your GTX 660 review. I can’t make up my mind – saddle up with that 192-bit card or risk some stutter in the games I play (and miss out on PhysX, TXAA, and Adaptive Vsync…)

$190 i5-3570k on Tigerdirect, they’re sold out now though.

I’m personally kinda getting frustrated with online Black Friday sales though. They’re doing extended sales in which the same item is on sale multiple times and at different price points, so if you buy it early then you don’t get a good deal and you don’t know what the best deal will be because they don’t tell you. It turns into a guessing game in which more frustration arises rather then satisfaction.

To make things worse you don’t know what will be on sale or when, like on Newegg, which means you have to sit there and closely monitor the page. Unlike the Steam sale, they don’t tell you when new items will go up and you know what will be on sale on Steam (games). I know that’s the intent, but it’s stupid and really doesn’t make it worth it in my opinion.

Can’t say that I have seen anything really mindblowing in deals as far as Canada goes. Maybe Cyber Monday will be better (or Boxing Day).

      • chuckula

[quote<]Boxing Day[/quote<] Oh, is that what you call Black Friday in Canada?* I like it since it's a pretty accurate description of what happens when Walmart opens up on [s<]Friday morning[/s<] [u<]Thursday night[/u<]. We could make the name more accurate by calling it Black & Blue Friday. * (yes, I know what the real Boxing Day is...)

        • Deanjo

Actually I believe that Boxing Day predates Black Friday by a few centuries. So “Black Friday” is what the states call their version of Boxing Day. ;D

Regular price locally on that SSD is $165 (so that brings it the same to neweggs after you include the shipping) so that doesn’t really wow me. As far as the Radeon goes, I won’t touch them with a ten foot pole as their linux support sucks.

I’m looking at buying a new computer. When I bought my existing box (AMD E-350) 1 1/2 years or so back, there weren’t any games I wanted to play. Now, there are. A LOT.

I am on a budget so I’m trying to get the very best bang for buck, while scrimping on some things
Core i3 3220 (Games still really don’t take that much advantage of quad core)
    8GB of ram
    Gigabyte Radeon 7850 2GB 975Mhz
    MSI Z77 G41
    Intel 335 240GB SSD
    Corsair CX 500

Comes to, with shipping and tax (CDN) $764.06. Rebates bring this to $689.

Problem is…once I buy that those Steam sales are looking mighty good…

Age of Empires 3 look awesome. It’s only $10 for another hour and a half on Steam.

        • BIF

Yes, but AoE III is a very playable game. I spent the $10 on this and some other old games that I like playing but were a hassle because they were non-Steam. At these prices of $10-$15, it no longer makes any sense for me to try to maintain them outside of Steam.

      • Bensam123

Yeah, it’s a fun game… The balancing is definitely sketchy, but for play with friends it’s quite a bit of fun. I’ve been playing it off and on since it’s release. Dawn of War (original) and Rise of Legends also fit into this category.

There was a Vertex 3 120GB at 50$ and Agility 4 256GB at 100$ at Tigerdirect and Cicuit City, NCIX had a 3TB internal Seagate at 90$ but sold out,Amazon, Best Buy and some others had(or still have) 3TB external Seagate at 99$. Plenty of TV deals, decent deals for 23 inch monitors, small cuts for Nexus 7 here and there, bigger cuts for other Asus tablets, the new A15 based Samsung Chromebook at 200$ somewhere.

Starcraft 2 is only $20 right now. Unfortunately, the preorder for Heart of the Swarm isn’t discounted.

      • derFunkenstein

More unfortunately I preordered HotS on the 15th on Amazon with a promise of beta access starting the 17th, and the beta still hasn’t come.

edit: cancelled and re-ordered, had my key in about 5 minutes. Followed that advice from an Amazon discussion thread.

Now I’ll cancel outright and get the digital edition direct from Blizzard when it comes closer. :p

        • Game_boy

The beta isn’t even close to done. They haven’t readded the Warhound, the Void Ray, Mutalisk, Raven, Infestor, Mothership, Phoenix and Hellbat all have incoming changes, and they need to implement all those ESPORTS features they promised like watching replays with friends and resume from replay.

No way will they hit the release date.

HOTS has been done for a while.

Activision-Blizzard is waiting for the spring 2013 to avoid cannibalizing their Holiday COD sales and screwing over 2012 “Progamer” SC leagues.

            • derFunkenstein

no, they’re changing quite a bit in multiplayer. I’ve been following the release notes.

            • Krogoth

            The game is already complete.

The only thing that is being work on is “beta-testing” the balancing on new units. It will still be a WIP when HOTS finallly comes out in Spring 2013.

HOTS is being delayed for economical and political reasons.

          • derFunkenstein

Warhound won’t be back. It effectively breaks TvP.
