I have a 2011. Not a bad car. Scary to drive in on the highway when it’s windy though. I’m averaging 32mpg which is mostly city driving.

        • A_Pickle

God that’d be nice. I drive around in a 1999 Subaru Outback. It’s wonderful, except for the 22-26 mpg in gas mileage I get in city.

I haven’t received gifts for years. I ask people to donate to their favorite charity in their own name instead. I’m older, objects have far less significance to me than when I was younger.

I have most of the things I [i<]need[/i<]. So, if I'm going to ask for something unrealistic... enough money to pay off my mortgage and student loans. Without debt and having my home paid off, I could save money at a fairly quick pace and any of my families future needs or wants would not be a problem.

Fortunately I live in a town of 30,000 where the nearest huge metropolitan area is 3 hours away. A nice-enough 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home with an attached garage can be had for around 100k here.

          • anotherengineer

I live in a town of 35,000 and the nearest huge metropolitan area is 7 hours away. It used to be about 135-150k a few years ago.

The joys of living in a gold mining town, gold goes up, no housing since last slump and the shortage creates a bit of demand, and then realtor’s & builders exaggerate it 10x further to make some coin.

5 yrs. down the road this place may be worth 150k again πŸ™

This place is on a 99’x132′ lot with 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, and a 24’x30′ detached garage, heated all winter. The property tax irks me up here though, 4800/yr, for a house built back in 1984, even the city gouges you here, can’t win, O wait, move somewhere else……….

            • derFunkenstein

Ah, yeah, there’s plenty on the market in my area, and lots of it has been listed for months. My wife keeps falling in love with houses on listings online. “Let’s buy this. Oh let’s buy this. Or this.” And I’m all like “you realize we need to really look these over carefully, right?” I don’t even want to think about adding house shopping to the rest of everything that has to happen by the end of the year. lol

…is another deal on a Samsung SSD that is not based around TLC and does give me 256GB for less than $175 plus comes from Amazon so I can use credit toward it. A bonus of free AssCreed wouldn’t be awful, either.

Another Gigabyte GF 670 for SLI would be a fine consolation prize.

      • A_Pickle

Yeah, I’m pretty skeptical of that TLC myself. Seems like a shameless cost-saving move to me, to the extent that I’ll buy an 830 series. I will not touch an 840, unless it’s a Pro.

Well, since either my Phenom II or MSI board seems to be going nutsoy (no spare CPU to test on the board to ensure which is conking out), I’m thinking of getting a new CPU, board and RAM. The wife is fully ok with it but I’m not, since I wanna use this setup for as long as I could. And yeah, maybe nowadays is just that. It’s starting to bite the pixie dust.

So… it looks like [b<]it's gonna be a Merry, merry Christmas!!! LOL!![/b<] Choices: Intel Core i5-3470, AMD FX-8350 or AMD A10-5800K (in descending order).

Dell to release an update to the U3011. And then get that new one for xmas

Much more expensive compared to many decent (and newer) 2560×1440 screens, could use an update on the backlighting or port selection (or have less OSD/inputs to help with lag).

        • ClickClick5

That is why I like it so! Not to mention that same engine should still return for the 2015 mustang. But, tweaked just a little more.
I have been watching and waiting. Once I get about $10,000-$15,000 saved, and Ford does their .9 apr for 60 months again, I’ll jump. But I’m waiting to see how the new ones turn out (the 2015 model).
If they rock, i’ll defiantly have the money saved by then. I might spring for a 16 model in 15. So no major rush, but tis be a glorious day once it happens.

      • TurtlePerson2

I actually got a Mustang recently. Just the V6 version, but it’s still a fun car. I can only imagine what the Shelby GT is like to drive.

      • UberGerbil

I had a 1985 Capri RS (the Mercury rebadge of the Mustang) with the 5.0l SVO engine and manual transmission. Hardly ever got above 2500rpm in city driving; I got used to going around corners in the rain with the back end kicked out and breaking the tires loose with every gear change if I wasn’t careful, but my passengers never did. Though the best part was that it was a Canadian model and my American passengers were invariably confused by the metric speedo and the power plug hanging out of the grill.

        • ClickClick5

Haha, power plug….”Do you charge your car?” “No…it keeps my engine block warm.”

My dad had a 75 Mercury Cougar and he would have a blast if I bought one. Mustang that is.

EDIT: The 460ci, 4 barrel carb, the works.

          • Forge

No, still not publicly available. It’s been “coming soon” for a long time, and Handbrake’s last release was in July.

I’m still using a nightly build of x264. It’s not the fastest solution on Earth, but it’s pretty fast, reference quality, and requires very, very little by way of requirements.

I was wondering about the couple of reviews (with pics) showing the unit burned/melted/destroyed after just a few uses on Amazon. Is there something that stupid people are doing to cause it to get screwed up? They claim that the company told them it was user error and would not give them a warranty refund.

        • 5150

I had this on my wish list for about 12 hours until I did some more reading and saw that you don’t get a smoke ring with it. Yes, I know the ring doesn’t add much to the flavor, but presentation is important too.

edit: Ugh, can’t decide. It looks like the simplest, best deal out there. I ended up adding this one, which looks like a newer model: [url<]http://amzn.com/B007FFYHM0[/url<]

      • chuckula

I’ve probably got an el-cheapo Brinkman similar to yours… yeah, poorly built, but I replaced the lava rocks with ones from the hardware store and re-built the brackets that hold the grates. Now it’s decent, although you are totally right: you don’t really have temperature control and you need to be careful to pull the meat at the right time.

yea. i agree that life is short and we only get one shot, but marriage is a serious thing. i remember when we were trying for the adoption and things were pretty rough that we had some TOUGH months. i one time thought my wife was ACTUALLY going to stab me. she didn’t, but my point is that a lot of stuff can be worked out, and struggling and work CAN (not always, depends how you take it) build character and improve you.

I THINK he was just teasing (it’s brute, after all, one of my boys), but in case he isn’t definitely see what you can do.

          • Bensam123

And sometimes it’s just better to find someone you actually enjoy being with rather then always trying to work things out when you aren’t even close to the other person anymore.

Did you adopt because you were going through some rough times? If so that’s no different then having kids to keep your marriage together (which doesn’t work the majority of the time).

            • sweatshopking

It’s true that sometimes it just doesn’t work.

During the adoption we had many challenges, and they put a lot of pressure on our relationship. The issues came from the process of the adoption.

My point is that many relationships have hard times. we had about 6 months where we were really at our wits end, but with patience, we were able to get past it.

First place for SSK in that contest so his adoptive daughter’s village can get a well!

No, but seriously…no young kids in my immediate family, kids of cousins who I don’t see much any more is the closest thing, so Christmas is all ‘adult’ now *ahem – no, not that way* and so presents aren’t a big deal. I tend to buy myself the ‘good’ presents πŸ™‚ and for family we get together and exchange small but personalized gifts rather than have a huge present-fest.
