At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, Lenovo introduced three new Android-based tablets due out in the second quarter of the year. The trio seems primarily targeted at the budget end of the spectrum, and you won't find a high-PPI display anywhere in the mix. There are a few surprises in the press release, though.
Dubbed a "mobile home entertainment center," the S1000 is the only 10-incher in the bunch. This puppy has a 1280x800 screen powered by an IPS panel with wide viewing angles. If you'd rather view content on an even larger display, there's a micro HDMI video output. MediaTek's quad-core MTK 8389/8125 processor lurks behind the screen, but we don't know much about the chip apart from its core count and 1.2GHz clock speed.
Lenovo wraps the S1000 in a slim chassis that measures 8.6 mm thick and weighs 1.2 lbs. A single charge purportedly yields eight hours of Wi-Fi web browsing, and users will have the option of built-in 3G connectivity.
In the market for something a little smaller? The A3000 brings a quad-core MediaTek processor to a 7" device. It's unclear whether this is the same chip as in the S1000, but it does have an identical core count and clock speed. Unfortunately, the screen resolution has been lowered to 1024x600. At least the panel is still of the IPS variety.
At 11 mm thick and 0.75 lbs, the A3000 looks plenty portable. The internal storage can be complemented with a Micro SD card, which is a nice touch, and there's optional 3G, as well.
I hesitate to call the A1000 the runt of the litter, but that appears to be what it is. Lenovo is keeping most details close to its chest for this model, which combines a 7" screen with front-facing speakers and Dolby Digital Plus audio. There's no word on the display resolution or panel type, which makes me think we're dealing with a TN display at no more than 1024x600. At least it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and offers a Micro SD slot. The processor has been bumped down to a dual-core MediaTek SoC, though.
Lenovo hasn't confirmed pricing for the new tablets, which will be available worldwide in the next few months. However, the firm says "each tablet in the range is competitively priced to ensure maximum accessibility to a premium user experience for all customers."
