Kotaku chronicles Doom 4 development woes

I have fond memories of playing Doom and its successor way back in the day. I even enjoyed Doom 3, flashlight and all, so I've been wondering what's up with the next chapter in the franchise. Doom 4 was first mentioned at Quakecon in 2007 and confirmed a year later, but we've heard little about the title since. As it turns out, the game was rebooted in 2011 and may not come out anytime soon.

Kotaku has an interesting story on Doom 4's development, including confirmation from Bethesda that an earlier version of the game "did not exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect." Id managment reportedly let the Doom team do its own thing while Rage was being finished, and what was produced wasn't up to snuff.

While there's no official word on what the scrapped game entailed, Kotaku's sources point to a heavily scripted experience jokingly referred to as "Call of Doom." The gameplay was purportedly generic, with the vehicle chase scene and mindless shooting galleries one might expect from a cinematic shooter. Ugh. I think I'd rather have monster closets.

When Rage failed to become a huge success, plans for a sequel were reportedly nixed to put everyone on Doom 4. Since then, a number of staffers have been fired or have left the studio, according to Kotaku's sources. Those sources say Id parent company ZeniMax is still unhappy with the progress that's been made on the game, and that it may "clean house and refocus the company to work on tech like the Id Tech 5 engine." Critics have for years suggested that Id should focus on engine technology and leave the actual game development up to other studios, and it looks like they could get their wish.
