Windows 8 tablets keep getting cheaper. The latest models are available for well under $500, and if that early listing we saw last week is any indication, we’ll soon see smaller, eight-inch offerings priced as low as $380.
So, where does that leave Windows RT?
The folks at PC World spoke to Acer President Jim Wong to inquire about his company’s plans for that operating system. As it turns out, Acer scrapped a WinRT tablet that was due in the second quarter of this year. Now, the company is waiting for the Windows RT equivalent of Windows 8.1.
"To be honest, there’s no value doing the current version of RT," Wong told PC World. He added that "[t]he plan for an RT tablet is ongoing." According to PC World, we’ll have to wait until the second half of this year to see an RT-powered tablet from Acer.
Last we heard, Windows 8.1 was expected to hit release-to-manufacturing status in August, with a retail release likely set for the late summer or early fall. The corresponding version of Windows RT should be out at the same time—as should new WinRT devices, hopefully.
