Everybody knows that government IT projects can be very profitable if
handled correctly. After all, they will eventually pay–they print the money. So when the words “indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract” were used in this
Federal Computer Week article I had to check into it. Apparently, the
Fed is going to take bids on a project to issue “Governmentwide” smartcards.
The contract represents a first step in addressing two pressing agency
concerns, according to GSA: securing networks and
buildings and providing
the tools to support e-commerce.
Somebody is going to make a mint on this deal. Some
estimate the deal to be worth $1billion. This kinda makes me wonder how long it will be until Federal-State smartcard IDs and drivers licenses will come into being with this “Governmentwide” initiative.
