Asus' new Android convertible combines Tegra 4, 2560x1600 display

Asus has finally introduced a successor to its Transformer Pad Infinity convertible tablet. The original, otherwise known as the TF700, combined a 1920x1200 display with a Tegra 3 SoC. Its replacement, the Transformer Pad TF701T, features Nvidia's more potent Tegra 4 silicon and bumps the display resolution up to 2560x1600.

The 10.1" screen has a 300 PPI pixel density, which should make the individual pixels nearly invisible. IPS panel technology ensures wide viewing angles and should deliver rich colors, as well. It looks like the Infinity's ultra-bright backlight has been dropped in favor of a more conventional design, though.

Under the hood, the Tegra 4 "T40X" SoC combines quad ARM Cortex-A15 CPU cores with an integrated GeForce packing 72 shader ALUs. The system-on-a-chip supports USB 3.0, and the Transformer takes advantage with a full-sized port in its keyboard dock.

Wireless options abound, including 802.11n Wi-Fi with Miracast support. Dual cameras? Check. Storage? 32 or 64GB of flash onboard, plus whatever you cram into the full-sized and microSDXC slots on the dock and tablet, respectively. There's 2GB of DDR3L RAM, too.

Asus says the tablet's battery is good for 13 hours of run time. You can add another four hours with the dock for 17 hours total. The two pieces weigh about 1.3 lbs each, and they combine to form a clamshell roughly 0.6" thick. I hope the weight balance is better than on the Infinity, which is a bit tippy in notebook mode with the screen tilted back.

The press release doesn't say how much the Transformer Pad will cost, but it's worth noting that HP's Tegra 4-based Slatebook X2 convertible is selling for $480 right now. That price includes the dock, though the tablet only has a 1920x1200 display, 16GB of flash, and slower USB 2.0 connectivity. The Slatebook's exterior doesn't look nearly as nice as the snazzy aluminum shell that encases the Transformer, either. I hope Asus doesn't charge too much of a premium, but one will almost certainly be attached.
