Deal of the week: a Radeon R9 290 for $400 and more

Welcome to our weekly deals post. This edition includes a couple of unexpected surprises along with the usual array of cheap SSDs.

  • Amazingly, TigerDirect is selling a Radeon R9 290 at close to AMD's original list price. The XFX Black Edition card is discounted to $419.99, and a mail-in rebate knocks the effective price down to AMD's $399.99 MSRP. As an added bonus, the Black Edition comes with a custom, dual-slot cooler similar to the one on the XFX 290X card Scott reviewed earlier this week.
  • Also on the graphics front, Newegg has a nice deal on a PowerColor Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition card. An instant discount knocks $20 off the price, bringing the card down to $169.99. There's a $30 mail-in rebate, too, dropping the total to just $139.99. The Radeon HD 7870 is comparable to the newer R9 270, which starts at around $180.
  • Here's the other surprise. The 32GB version of Asus' Transformer Book T100 convertible is on sale at Newegg for $374 after coupon code INTEL25. That price isn't noteworthy on its own, but it applies to an updated version of the T100 that integrates a 500GB mechanical hard drive into the keyboard dock. Pretty slick. Newegg also has the 64GB version of the T100 discounted to $354 after promo code TABLET25. That model appears to be identical to the one we reviewed last year; its keyboard dock doesn't have a hard drive inside.
  • The best storage deal this week is easily Seagate's 600 SSD 480GB, which is slashed to $219.99 at TigerDirect. Cost per gig: $0.46. Unlike a lot of other discounted SSDs, the Seagate drive offers great all-around performance. It's certainly faster than some of the alternatives, which include Crucial's M500 240GB for $109.99 (after promo code VWM124393) and Kingston's V300 120GB for $59.99.

Those are the deals that caught my eye this week. There are others, of course, and you can post your favorites in the comments below.

Update: Here's a late addition we figured was worth making. You can now grab Far Cry 3 for $6.99 at Newegg. Quite the deal.
