$250 Samsung Chromebook 2 has Intel inside

Samsung has a new $250 Chromebook out, and it's powered by one of Intel's Bay Trail chips. Say hello to the new Samsung Chromebook 2 XE500.

The Chromebook 2 XE500 doesn't look all that different from the original Samsung Chromebook we reviewed two years ago. Under the hood, the newcomer packs a Celeron N2840 processor, which is a dual-core Bay Trail variant with a 2.16GHz clock speed (and a 2.58GHz peak speed). Also included are 2GB of RAM, 16GB of solid-state storage, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and a USB 3.0 port. Samsung quotes nine hours of battery life, which shouldn't leave users looking for outlets all the time.

The company charges $50 less for the Chromebook 2 XE500 than it does for the XE503 model, which is powered by one of Samsung's own ARM-based Exynos 5 processors. That system has eight CPU cores and 4GB of RAM, which may justify the higher price, but its rated battery life is actually slightly shorter than the Intel system's, at 8.5 hours. (Thanks to Liliputing for the tip.)
