Fractal Design's new fans are priced to move

Fractal Design introduced a couple of new fans this week. That's not the most exciting news, but the Amazon and Newegg reviews for the company's existing spinners are overwhelmingly positive, so the fresh additions deserve a closer look.

The Silent Series R3 spans a multitude of sizes from 40 mm to 140 mm. It's based on a fairly conventional design with nine blades, rifle bearings, and a three-pin connector. The 120-mm unit spins at 1200 RPM and is rated to generate 46.5 CFM of airflow and 21.6 dBA of noise. Rotational speeds are slightly lower for the 140-mm model, which spins at 1000 RPM while pumping out 56.1 CFM and 20.5 dBA.

The Dynamic Series 140 mm

If you're looking for something a little more upscale, the Dynamic Series is littered with aerodynamic upgrades for the fan blades and housing. The hub is balanced by a magnet, and the bearings are hydraulic. Sizes are limited to 120 and 140 mm, both with three-pin connectors.

Despite having fewer blades than the Silent Series, the Dynamic fans boast better airflow and noise characteristics at the same rotational speeds. The 120-mm unit is rated for 52.3 CFM and 19.4 dBA, while the 140-mm one is pegged at 68.4 CFM and 18.9 dBA. Not bad considering the price premium over the Silent Series is only $3 a pop.
