TR BBQ XII field report: We had a blast

Scott and I traveled to Holland, Michigan this past weekend for TR BBQ XII. While Scott is a veteran of the event, this BBQ was my first—though it certainly won't be my last. Scott is at the Intel Developer Forum this week and tapped me to write the post-BBQ report. Challenge accepted.

By my estimate, we had just north of 40 people show up during the busiest part of the day, and a great time was had by all. I've uploaded all of my pictures in the accompanying gallery, and I've selected some highlights from the day for your enjoyment. You can also relive the day through the archived live stream on Twitch.

Our prize table, stocked with Fractal Design's Define R5 cases and an EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti

It wouldn't be a TR BBQ without a cornhole tournament, and plenty of folks got in on the fun. Here we see drfish and Westbrook348 in the midst of an intense duel, while Rious looks on

After many heated battles, idchafee emerged victorious and took home the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti grand prize

thegleek took second place and chose the windowed Fractal Design Define R5 as his trophy case

FroBozz_Inc took home the Cooler Master Glacer 240L graciously donated to the prize pool by drfish

Captain Ned took home a Define R5 of his own during the prize raffle

Westbrook348 was the third lucky winner of a Define R5

As the sun went down, we moved to the beach in preparation for an up-close-and-personal fireworks display, courtesy of Shoes

While the fireworks were being set up, the kids got ahold of some LED light swords and had an epic battle in the dark

These weren't any old backyard fireworks—they were first-class. My hearing was a little worse for wear after, but the show was an amazing conclusion to the evening.

Scott took some slow-motion video of the festivities as they unfolded, which is well worth a watch—who doesn't like to see things blow up at 240 frames per second?

Our thanks once again to drfish and family for opening their lakeside cabin to the gerbil masses, to zgirl for preparing her amazing ribs, to just brew it! for sharing his home-brewed beers, to Shoes for his pyrotechnics, and to everybody else who contributed food and drink to the event. It's humbling to write for such a friendly and generous community of readers. We also thank Fractal Design and EVGA for their generous contributions to our prize pool.

If you were there and took pictures or video of something I missed, please share in the official TR BBQ XII thread. We'll see you all again next year!

Is that less swag than previous years?

Certainly looks like some high quality gear, but I just remember quite a bit of stuff in years past.

      Quality > quantity.

++ Neat to be able to put faces to some of you and that is an awesome shirt.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote that there are no second acts in American lives.

But if you’ve been around here for a long time, you can remember when thegleek was a banned pariah. Now, in this time, he has returned to claim a case directly from the man who banned him! Oh, the drama and humanity!

I’m pretty sure I saw in the fireworks slow-mo an “elite” demonstration, try 32-33 secs in…

      • just brew it!

Sorry to (partially) spoil a story of redemption, but I believe it was actually Kevin who banned him.

I like Captain Ned’s name sticker.

I’ve been in enough BBQ post pictures that if you don’t recognize me by now, on your own heads be it (42!!).

It took 4 BBQs, but my introduction of tie-dye back at BBQ IX (hmm, I don’t remember running into House Richese or Hwi Noree) finally took hold.

It was a momentary fit of whimsy & sarcasm.

I’m jealous, I never go to work BBQ’s but I’d totally go to the tech report BBQ! It’s just that Michigan is a long way from Oregon!

Nice photos. It certainly looks like it was a lot of fun. Now, I think it’s time for TR editors to get back to work and update the Windows 10 poll on the front page 🙂

And unlike windows 10, it was something AWESOME.
