Look who's back. The Vaio brand will be available in the US again, in a partnership with transcosmos. Its wares will be sold on transcosmos' EC web shop and Microsoft's online store, as well as "select Microsoft stores across the U.S." The first available model will be the high-powered Vaio Z Canvas convertible, targeted at graphic designers and content creators.
The Z Canvas has a 12.3", 2560x1704 screen in an 11.9" x 8.4" anodized aluminum body that's only half an inch thick. Creative power is provided by a Core i7-4770HQ CPU with a base clock of 2.2GHz and a 3.4GHz Turbo speed. The base model comes with 8 GB of RAM, which can be doubled to 16GB. A 256GB SATA SSD handles storage duties in the base model, and those with a need for speed can opt for 512GB and 1TB PCIe storage.
Vaio claims the screen is factory-calibrated, and it's claimed to be able to reproduce 95% of the Adobe RGB color space. The screen also has an "enhanced coating" meant to improve stylus precision, and Vaio says the glass cover is tempered on all sides to improve shock resistance. The Z Canvas' stylus features 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity with adjustable response curves, and users can choose among several stylus nibs and grips. There are a few extra tricks, too—the detachable keyboard charges wirelessly when it's resting on the Z Canvas, and the integrated kickstand can be adjusted continuously through its range of angles.
The Vaio Z Canvas starts at $2,199, and it'll be available on October 5. Preorders will begin in mid-September.
