Intel cancels 2GHz Xeon processor

— 12:29 PM on September 21, 2001

Intel has decided to cancel the 2GHz clock speed ramp of Foster (Xeon) in favor of a new server chip code-named Prestonia, due next year. Because it is manufactured on the 0.13-micron process, Prestonia will enable higher clock speeds and lower power consumption. Plumas, a new server chipset, will be introduced during the first quarter of next year, as well.
