Panasonic's Toughbook 20 begs to be dropped, roasted, and splashed

Panasonic's Toughbook laptops are famous for their knock-around durability. Recently, the Toughbook lineup has expanded to include rugged tablets as well as notebooks, and now Panasonic has launched what it claims is the world's first ruggedized convertible, the Toughbook 20.

Looks pretty badass, huh? Panasonic says the Toughbook is built on a magnesium alloy chassis. Its chunky shell meets several ruggedized standards: MIL-STD-810G for shock protection, IP65 for water and dust-proofing, and MIL-STD-461F for eletromagnetic protection.

The Toughbook 20 isn't just about ruggedness, though. This baby should offer decent performance thanks to a Skylake Core m5-6Y57, which is a two-core, four-thread CPU clocked at 1.1GHz base and 2.8GHz turbo clocks. Panasonic gives that chip 8GB of RAM to play with. A 128GB SSD (with a built-in heater) handles storage duties, and 256GB or 512GB drives are optional. Panasonic says the 10.1", 1920x1200 IPS display is viewable even in sunlight, which is a reasonable claim given its 800-nit maximum brightness. Users can wear gloves while interacting with this touch screen, too.

Most of the wired connectivity actually resides on the tablet portion of the device. USB, HDMI, and Ethernet ports go with the tablet when it's detached, along with audio jacks and a micro-SIM slot for optional cellular connectivity. The keyboard dock has a few more USB ports, an HDMI output, an SDXC slot, and space for an extra battery. 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, an optional dedicated GPS dongle, and an NFC reader handle wireless connectivity.

An optional "bridge battery" gives owners one minute to hot-swap batteries should they suddenly find themselves running out of juice. The integrated carrying handle doubles as a kickstand, too.

The Toughbook 20 weighs in at 3.9 lbs with the keyboard dock (2.1 lbs without) and measures 10.7" x 9.2" x 1.3." Panasonic says it'll be ready to face the elements in "early 2016."
