This fall is proving to be the season of SoCs. Samsung's Exynos 8 Octa 8890 is just the latest high-end mobile processor to hit the market. Samsung says this SoC is its first high-end chip to integrate the application processor and LTE modem into a single package.
That application processor is Samsung's first chip to use the company's rather-unromantically-named "premium custom cores" based on the ARM-v8 64-bit architecture. This Exynos uses four of Samsung's own CPU cores paired with four more ARM Cortex-A53s to live up to its Octa name. ARM's Mali T-880 GPU provides pixel-pushing power. All that goodness is fabricated on Samsung's 14-nm FinFET process.
Samsung says the Exynos 8 Octa is better-equipped to handle heterogenous multi-processing across those cores for higher efficiency. The custom cores and other improvements are good for a claimed 30% performance increase and a 10% improvement in power efficiency compared to the Exynos 7 Octa.
The on-package LTE modem in the Exynos 8 Octa supports the LTE Release 12 standard, Category 12 download speeds of up to 600Mbps, and Category 13 upload speeds of up to 150Mbps with carrier aggregation. Samsung says it'll begin mass production of the Exynos 8 Octa late this year.
