TR’s 12 days of giveaways, day 11: EVGA’s GeForce GTX 980 FTW

It's Christmas Eve, and that means it's day 11 of TR's 12 days of giveaways. Before we announce the sweet prize we have today, we need to wrap up yesterday's unfinished business. Congratulations are in order for Nathanael Rebiger. He's the proud new owner of Gigabyte's GA-970-Gaming motherboard and AMD's FX-8370 CPU. Nathanael, look for a message soon from our business guy, Adam Eiberger, with instructions on how to claim your prize. Thanks again to Gigabyte and AMD for hooking us up with all that great gear.

For today's giveaway EVGA has generously provided us with one of its EVGA GeForce GTX 980 FTW Gaming ACX 2.0 graphics cards. The GeForce GTX 980 is a solid card on its own, but EVGA's FTW touches make this card into more than the average GTX 980.

For starters, EVGA's ACX 2.0 cooler uses two fans with swept blades to both run quieter and keep the card cooler than a reference heatsink. The EVGA GeForce GTX 980 FTW also delivers higher-than-reference 1279 MHz base and 1380 MHz boost speeds. To support those higher clocks, EVGA tweaks the power delivery system for the FTW card by swapping out one of the standard 6-pin PCIe power connectors for an 8-pin plug. The card also gets a 6+2 power phase configuration instead of the standard 4+1 design. It even has dual BIOS chips (just in case). Thanks to EVGA for making today's giveaway possible.

If you've already entered our contest and haven't won anything yet, you're already eligible to win this bundle. If you haven't entered or need to catch up on what's happening, check out the rules and details in our introductory post, and enter using the form on that page. Good luck.

This would pair exceedingly well with my new Predator X34. GTX 760 is being a real champ so far, but only on mediumish settings for 2 year old games. Would love to see high/ultra at 100fps!

    This, a waterblock, and a 3440 G-Sync monitor. That’s all I want for Christmas! That’s it.

All I need is this. This ashtray. And this paddle game. This ashtray and this paddle game, that’s all I need.

      3440 G-sync is a thing of beauty.

That will make one nice Christmas present for some one tomorrow morning.

In my country, someone won a particularly big jackpot last week. Good grief. He’s rich enough to feed money into the fire to keep himself warm this Christmas, that’s for sure.

    That’s one nice, decent-looking cooler.

I’m sick of coolers that try too hard to look fierce and end up looking like a mashed car.

Congrats, dude. That’s one sweet CPU and mobo you’ve got there. I’ve been using my FX-8350 for 1,104 earth rotations now, and while it may not be as fast as even an old Core i7-3770K in every respect, it’s still one fine piece of technology which I’m sure you’ll find more than adequate for most of the things you’d care to do for quite some time to come even at this point in its existence.

Wow. Now, I really hope I got the trivia question correct.

I was wondering/thinking the exact same thing!

    Nutballs. But, congrats, Nathaneal!

Anyone know where I can actually buy one of those Gigabyte motherboards? I see both the 970 and 990fx gaming on their website, but it seems they’re not for sale at any of the usual suspects. And searching for “970 gaming” returns a lot of results for their GeForce 970 Gaming card.

I can give you that board you want… if you’re willing to pay the right price.

Meet me at the black alley between 4th and 5th St. tonight at 12:00. I’ll be wearing a black trench coat.

I would much rather win a Classified 980Ti but with the chances of wining a little 980 being so small I will not complain.

I’ll take either one since either would be a nice upgrade from my 650 TI. Yes, not even a 650 TI Boost. Just the old 1GB version which definitely has issues running modern AAA games. 😉

I won’t even complain about having to buy a better PSU to support the new GPU.
