Exynos 7 Octa 7870 brings 14nm FinFET to the mid-range

Samsung has announced its latest mobile SoC, the Exynos 7 Octa 7870. This chip is meant to serve in the mid-range mobile device market. The SoC is the latest design built on the company's 14-nm FinFET process. Samsung claims that's a first for SoCs aimed at this market segment.

The Octa 7870 foregoes the big.LITTLE SoC design of the more powerful Exynos 8 Octa 8890 in favor of eight 1.6GHz Cortex-A53 cores. Samsung says these 14-nm cores will provide the same performance as comparable 28-nm cores while using 30% less power. Like the Octa 8890, an LTE modem is built in, but downlink speed is limited to 300Mbps on the 7870.

The SoC can power displays with resolutions up to 1920x1200, and it supports video playback at a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 at 60 FPS. Its image signal processor can support up to 16MP front and rear cameras, or two 8MP data streams at once in dual-camera mode. Samsung says the the Octa 7870 will go into mass production this quarter.
