Reflect on this: Ten terabits per second
Here's a cool ABCNews.com article
talking about a new router technology from Lucent capable of 10 terabits per second speeds. The router is entirely optical, using microscopic mirrors to direct signals from one fiber to another without first converting them to electrical signals. Lucent says this will cut service providers' power consumption by 100 times, and the new router will direct network traffic sixteen times faster than an electrical router. The router will apparently be available to some customers in July of next year, and will be commercially available in December of next year. Sounds like just what I need at home.
