ATI 'optimizes' Quake 3 image quality

The folks over at 3DCenter.de have taken ATI to task for its Quake-specific optimizations with the Radeon 8500 drivers. Though in German, Babel Fish yields some interesting information:
By means of the new " optimized " ATi driver this however definitely no more is given. ATi reduces simply the image quality, in order to stand there in bench mark better.
A picture's worth a thousand words, and 3DCenter has a few nicely screenshot comparisons with and without ATI's optimizations. Definitely check this one out, the pictures alone make quite a compelling case. Thanks to the OCP for the tip.
