Someone over at Team Group must have read some old articles about otherwise-fast SSDs throttling under heavy loads, because the company's Cardea M.2 NVMe storage devices come packing giant, blazing red heatsinks attached with high-conductivity thermal adhesive. The drives are available in 240GB and 480GB capacities.
The Cardea SSDs boast sequential read speeds up to 2600 MB/s regardless of capacity, and sequential writes of up to 1450 MB/s. When it comes to random I/O, they should be able to do 180K read IOPS. Random write figures are 140K IOPS for the 240GB Cardea Jr. and 150K IOPS for the 480GB drive. Team says its big drive can endure 670 terabytes written, while the smaller model can stand up to 335 TBW. The company made no mention of the controller or the particular type of NAND chips used to deliver this level of performance. Impressive figures, nonetheless.
Team Group is proud of the Canadian-sourced thermal adhesive used to attach that big red cooler. That one-inch-tall slab may come at a price, though, since buyers might not be able to populate otherwise-available PCIe slots when the Cardea is sitting underneath. Laptop owners are going to have to look elsewhere, since Team Group says that "this product has a heat sink, recommended the use of desktop only" (sic).
The Team Group Cardea 240 GB SSD is available now for $140, and the 480 GB model can be yours today for $270. Both units are backed by a three-year warranty. If the big hunk of aluminum strapped to the drive doesn't assuage your concerns about drive cooling, perhaps some other M.2 NVMe drive with this water block strapped to it would be more to your liking.
