    The missing link:
    12. Threadripper review @ The Tech Report

If I was an AMD fanboy I’d be very happy that TR is delaying the review because there’s a high likelihood that Jeff is working with the DAWbench developers to improve the performance results for Threadripper in DAWbench, which was apparently a big loss for Threadripper in the original tests.

In looking at the ThreadRipper and Vega reviews, I can’t help but think that Apple has made the worst possible choices for their iMac Pro in picking Intel over AMD for the CPU but AMD over Nvidia for the GPU.

BTW, when was the last time AMD had an unambiguous lead over Nvidia?

      4870?

I guess I should qualify that to be ‘for 3d graphical rendering applications’. If it’s GPGPU, then I would say they’ve been ahead since then and haven’t looked back–at least for the OpenCL world.

Well… kind of, because Nvidia have segmented their products between 3D graphics and GPGPU; it’s not like they don’t have the Tesla GPGPU monsters.

You might be able to make a case for the HD 7970, at least for the couple of months it was around before the GTX 680 came out. From the TR review conclusion:

[quote<] For the time being, it's clearly the finest single-GPU video card in the world, and as such, it's earned a TR Editor's Choice award. [/quote<]. But then again, that opinion must be biased... After all, doesn't the author work for AMD?

      9700 Pro

That’s the one I had in mind, but didn’t know…

The question was “the last time” not “the first time”. Besides, the 9700 is automatically disqualified as that wasn’t an AMD GPU.

Excellent work. Five stars. Squirrels, amirite?

I might buy a vega56 ryzen pack. But idk if my budget this year can afford a new desktop and a potential ryzen mobile laptop. Hmm… I wish AMD would give a hard release date on raven ridge.

Threadripper comes with a hefty price, so it’s interesting to know whether your pc will last longer if you have such a thing in it, instead of a Ryzen 7. Or whether the thing will be as fast outdated as any other ยตp.
