Not long after id Software released the source code interpreted by the game engine to make Quake III Arena work, people on the ‘net began releasing binary, compiled DLL files that claim to speed up the game. People are claiming up to 20% speed increases with the complied DLLs. This move seems to have sparked a bit of a controversy over how mod authors should approach development for Q3. id Software’s position is clear, and it looks to be right: only interpreted game code prevents very serious cheating problems. So look at it this way: cheaters are stealing as much as 20% of our performance. Grr.
