Poll time: Paper launch lead times

— 1:26 PM on October 1, 2002

Oh do we have a kicker of a poll for you today. But before we get into it, let's take a look at last week's results, which asked how much memory you all have on your graphics cards. 44% of readers are chugging along with 64MB of memory, followed by a distant 25% with 128MB, and 22% with 32MB. 4% of voters have a paltry 16MB, and 3% have 8MB or less. Finally, 2% are cruising with what must be professional graphics boards equipped with 256MB of memory.

This week we're taking on a topic that should be fresh in everyone's minds: paper launches. Just about everyone has done it at some point, and now it seems to be a new strategy for at least one processor manufacturer, which makes me wonder:

How much lead time is appropriate for a paper launch?
And no, lead time between the paper launch and limited availability in special edition systems from a select list of OEMs doesn't count. This is lead time from the product launch to when you can actually walk into a store and pick one up. So, how long is reasonable?
Tip: You can use the A/Z keys to walk threads.
