Please don't drink your phone
A team at Los Alamos Labs and Motorola have designed
a miniature fuel cell powered by alcohol (methanol). The technology is promising methanol conversion efficiencies as high as 40 percent and an energy density ten times that of conventional rechargeable batteries. The team hopes to use inkjet cartridge-sized fuel cells for mobile phones, offering a power life of one week per methanol cartridge. The technology may one day be applied to other portable electronics, such as laptops or PDAs.
