AMD announces HE, EE Opterons

AMD has announced a couple of new Opteron flavors that promise to bring lower power consumption to workstations and servers. Available in March, Opteron HE and EE chips will consume only 55 and 30W, respectively. HE chips will be available in 2.0GHz x46 configurations, while the EEs will debut at 1.6GHz as x40 chips.

At least initially, the HE and EE chips will share the same price bracket as AMD's fastest Opterons; here's how the new chips fit into AMD's wholesale price list:

100 Models Price 200 Models Price 800 Models Price
148 $733 248 $851 848 $1514
146 HE $733 246 HE $851 846 HE $1514
140 EE $733 240 EE $851 840 EE $1514
146 $278 246 $690 846 $1165
144 $218 244 $455 844 $873
142 $178 242 $316 842 $698
140 $163 240 $198 840 $698
HE and especially EE Opterons should be popular in rackmount and blade servers where they'll face off against IBM's new PowerPC 970FX and perhaps even Intel's Pentium M. In that realm, IBM may have the edge; an advanced 0.09-micron SOI fabrication helps the PowerPC 970FX hit speeds of 2.0GHz while consuming only 25W.
