Dual-layer DVD R coming in May

Sony has announced that it will be shipping double- layer DVD recorders in just a few months. According to spec sheets, the internal DRU-700A (ATAPI) and external DRX-700UL (USB/FireWire) sport speeds of 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, 8x DVD R, 4x DVD RW, and 2.4x DVD+R DL. While recording media are expected to be scarce and expensive, the technology itself appears to be in place, and reasonably priced at $230 for the internal drive, with a $100 premium for the external model. The first drives are set to hit the shelves in May, and will hopefully finish their first 9.4GB discs at 2.4x sometime before the end of June.
