Microsoft extends product support
I noticed over at Slashdot that Microsoft has expanded its support life cycle for business and developer products. The mainstream support phase for business and developer products is unchanged, but the extended support phase has been bumped from two to five years. Microsoft has also increased the online self-help support phase from eight to ten years and promised to offer security updates for products up to a decade after their original release date.
Unfortunately, it appears that the generous new support plan will not apply to Microsoft's consumer products. Still, it's a positive move forward, even if may be partially motivated by a delayed Longhorn launch.
