POWER5 performance revealed

— 10:53 AM on August 2, 2004

Ace's Hardware has whipped up a performance brief on the new IBM POWER5 processor. This CPU is a dual-core processor with two-way SMT (think Hyper-Threading), so it would appear as four logical CPUs to an operating system. The POWER5 features many tweaks to its cache and memory subsytems for better performance, including a larger L2 cache and a massive 36MB external L3 cache. With the enhancements, the POWER5 rips through the SPECfp2000 benchmark faster than the Itanum 2 or Opteron.

Tip: You can use the A/Z keys to walk threads.
