Intel dominates TOP500 supercomputer list

— 3:41 AM on November 10, 2004

DigiTimes has analyzed the latest TOP500 supercomputer rankings and unearthed some interesting trends, the most surprising of which is Intel's ever-increasing share of the supercomputing pie. Intel processors power nearly 64% of the systems on the TOP500 list, while IBM and AMD's chips settle for 10.8% and 6.2%, respectively. Intel can't take any credit for the fastest supercomputer on the TOP500 list, though. The US Department of Energy's BlueGene system, which currently sits atop the rankings, is powered by IBM PowerPC processors.
