Half-Life 2 reviewed

GameSpot has the goods in the first online review I’ve seen. They give it a 9.2 out of 10, which is considerably better than the 8.5 they gave to Doom 3.

Update: More reviews here.

which you can’t compare to HL2 since reviews are platform specific

    meh.. i think i’ll pass.
i dont like steam and i dont like companies trying to force users to do things only one way.

makes one wonder why i still use MS… i guess because there is no viable alternative. makes me sad.

You can still by the Boxed version but you do have to activate it…… but hey I kind of like valve even though they’re a year late I don’t mind thier draconian bit as much as microsofts. did I just say I don’t mind software activation? I think I’m losing it……

    #15, point well taken.
    #6, thanks for the summary

Great engine & “meh” AI huh? dang…

Wonder what kind of products we’d get if Valve and Bungie mated. Heck, almost anyone & Bungie. Like or hate Halo/Halo2, their AI are great to say the least.

But valve’s physics engine appears to rock beyond rockin’…

Can an engine make a game? It definitely makes a mod, but I’m not into the “I’m buying this game because I know that the mods for it are going to be great!” mentality…

These reviews are based on these guys playing the game at Valve’s headquarters. I’m not sure how long they were able to spend with it, but it probably was somewhere in the ‘hours’ range, and therefore I won’t put too much weight into these scores.

so valve let them unlock early?

No, the reviewers were sent to Valve’s offices where Valve gave each of them their own private room and computer to play the game on.

I don’t want to go back and find the exact review to copy/paste all the specs of the test rigs used but I do recall the game was being played in “silky smoothness” at 1280×1024 on a Radeon 9800 Pro. The machines also had 2GB of RAM but I don’t recall the processor used.

Why not release it on steam for the reviewers, let them test it on their own platforms? Be a good test of steam’s authentication and security. oh well, what do I know, I don’t write gaming distribution enginesg{<.<}g

Sadly I have a windowless office in the basement. Fitting for a troll, but kinda depressing.

            We move in 7 months and I get a window for being a pet employee of the month 5 times in a rowg{

A butt-kissing corporate weiner, I’m disappointed. I took you for an independent thinker, but now I found out you’re an executive lap-dog. Yap-yap.

Hey trout boy, how does it feel to be in a lone red state in the North? That has to be slightly grating to see maw and paw cancel out your voteg{<.<}g

Actually I am the only person in my ENTIRE family that is “blue,” wife’s included. However, I have a 17 month old that I will mold into my own beliefs. Slowly, we’ll take over the majority! I get beat up pretty hard whenever I start running my mouth about George, but it’s worth it. At least I can say, “I didn’t vote for him.”

Besides, it’s three electoral votes, nobody give a hell. I think Kerry sent his sister up here to a couple of reservations, and that was the best we got.

does it really matter what the press has to say? we’re all going to play it anyway…

And it’s not like anyone who got to play it early is going to say anything too bad about it, and risk getting on Valve’s bad side.

Contains minor spoilers in the first few paragraphs, so I skipped the restg{<.<}g

The first page vaguely describes the first mission, but the rest of it isn’t too bad on spoilers. Here’s a summary: Graphics are great, physics are outstanding, AI seems worse than HL1, and storyline seems “out of focus” for the first half, good for the second half, but with a disappointing ending.

Also, loading is like the original (small, quick-loading levels), there are 2 vehicles, and there’s no multi-player deathmatch, just counterstrike. Frankly, that last part is the most disappointing to me – I grew tired of the CS freaks about 2 years ago.

Well, I’m sure the game will still be good (it did get a 9.2), but it sounds like its not “Best game evar!!11!” good, which is what they were shooting for, according to the earlier gamespot article.

Nah, Gamespot editors are a bunch of wankers. Get the game – HL2 is GOTY material.
