IBM releases software patents for open source use

— 2:31 AM on January 11, 2005

IBM has made 500 software patents available for use in open source projects. The company hopes that releasing patents will encourage interoperability and open source development, and plans to make additional patents available in the future. With 10,000 software patents, IBM certainly has an extensive library to draw from. 500 patents may be just a drop in the bucket, but it's an encouraging gesture.
