Friday night topic: Multi-core's prospects?

— 7:54 PM on March 4, 2005

The week at IDF, Intel presented its vision of the future of the CPU, in which there would be as many as 16 or more CPU cores per chip, as Moore's Law allows for transistor count growth. But does such talk make sense? How many CPU cores can the average desktop processor have before diminishing returns prevent additional cores from really mattering? How far can thread-level parallelism really take us before we're wasting transistors?

Discuss.

Tip: You can use the A/Z keys to walk threads.
