Cray pledges dual-core Opteron support

Cray has announced that it will offer dual-core Opteron processors in its XD1 and XT3 supercomputers starting in July. Using dual-core chips will allow Cray to increase processor densities, which becomes increasingly important when building systems with thousands of processors. Cray expects dual-core chips to boost the performance of its XD1 cabinets, which currently house 288 single-core Opterons, from 744 gigaflops to over 1.2 teraflops.
