Intel's average cost per chip: 40 bucks

Here's an eye-opening tidbit: it only costs about $40 for Intel to manufacture a Pentium 4 chip or the like, according to an In-Stat report. In fact, that's been the case for some time, since "The cost has been steady at about $40 since 2003." I've heard numbers in that ballpark in the past, but things don't seem to have changed in the past year or two. Something to think about when you're getting ready to fork over upwards of $500 for a high-end CPU.
