2005 Video Game Awards nominees announced

Spike TV has announced a list of nominees for its 2005 Video Game Awards. This year's installment of the Video Game Awards sinks to new lows, with the nominees list filled with games that haven't even been released. In fact, some nominees, such as Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie and 50 Cent: Bulletproof, won't be released until November 21—three days after the Video Game Awards air. And it gets worse. Project Gotham 3 for the Xbox 360 is nominated for best graphics, but the Xbox 360 doesn't launch until November 22. And what's with The Shack getting snubbed in the gaming web site categories?

While the VGAs have often been criticized by hardcore gamers, I can't even imagine mainstream audiences taking this year's list of nominees seriously. Surely the gaming industry, which will reportedly be worth over $35 billion this year, can come up with a better platform to showcase its finest.
