Blu-ray to support mandatory managed copy
The Blu-ray group has conceded to an HP request to add mandatory managed copy support to the next-gen DVD spec. Managed copy will allow consumers to make copies of movies they purchase, although DRM restrictions will likely apply.
Despite pledging to support managed copy, the Blu-ray group is apparently not ready to meet HP's demand that iHD interactive features, which will be supported in Windows Vista, be included in the standard. The Blu-ray group contends that although support for iHD may be added to the spec in the future, doing so now would delay the format's launch. For now, Blu-ray's interactive features will be Java-based. HP doesn't appear to be happy with that response, and has threatened to dabble in HD-DVD. And the next-gen DVD soap opera continues.
