Rambus discusses FB-DIMMs

DailyTech has an interview with Rambus Senior Principal Engineer Dr. Steven Woo discussing the upcoming FB-DIMM memory standard. Fully Buffered DIMMs, or FB-DIMMs, use on-module buffers and serial signaling to allow greater capacity, higher bandwidth, and lower pin counts than traditional DIMMs. While Rambus was not involved in the design of the FB-DIMM specification, Dr. Woo discusses similar difficulties Rambus faced when developing its own memory standards, including the maintaining of electrical integrity through high-speed links. Dr. Woo claims FB-DIMMs are a "reasonable solution" for servers, where they should be able to significantly boost memory capacities, but that they raise cost, power, and latency too much to be worthwhile in other systems.
