Well, we all knew it was coming. This just popped into my inbox:

HANNOVER, GERMANY-MARCH 22, 2001-At CeBIT, AMD today announced its continued
industry leadership position by introducing the 1.33GHz and 1.3GHz AMD
Athlon(tm) processors. The 1.33GHz AMD Athlon processor-based platforms with
Double Data Rate (DDR) memory outperform the Intel Pentium® 4
processor-based platforms by up to 40 percent on a variety of benchmarks,
including video encoding, audio, video and image editing, and 3D modeling
and animation.

The funky 1.3333333333GHz speed rating thing is a result of the fact the fastest version of the Athlon runs on a 266MHz bus. AMD also intro’ed the 1.3GHz Athlon for 200MHz bus speeds. The 1.33GHz version will run $350 (in lots of 1,000, as is the custom), while the 1.3GHz one will cost $318. Not a bad deal by almost any measure.

This ought to solidify AMD’s lead in the desktop processor performance wars until Intel’s next move. Have a look at my Pentium 4 vs. Athlon DDR comparison to see how things stack up. Then, think about an even slightly faster Athlon. You get the idea.

Personally, I just stuck a 1.2GHz Athlon and a 266MHz bus-mobo into my own PC, and it’s like butta. I’m convinced John Carmack slipped some code into Quake III that adds in some slight, random error on railgun shots, and the amount of error is inversely proportional to one’s processor speed. You know it’s true.
