Much has happened since we last checked availability and pricing for AMD’s Radeon HD 4870 and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 260 graphics cards. Nvidia has cut the price of the GTX 260 from almost $400 to as little as $300, and 4870s have become increasingly plentiful. In light of those changes, we decided to have yet another look at how these cards compare in the wild.

We’ve updated our methodology a little bit, too. We’re still limiting our search to Newegg, TigerDirect, ZipZoomFly, and Buy.com in the United States, since these are the four computer hardware e-tailers with the most reviews on both our price search engine and ResellerRatings.com. However, we’ve added NCIX to our search in order to probe availability and pricing in the great Canadian north. Prices for NCIX listings are all in Canadian dollars, and we highlighted available models in green, as usual.

Average $304.99 $299.99 $299.79 $304.74 $314.16
Overall average $302.38

On the Radeon front, average pricing has gone down slightly from $307.18 on July 2 to $302.38 now. Availability seems quite broad, and you should be able to nab a 4870 for $299.99 or less if you shop around a little bit. We should also note that some e-tailers offer mail-in rebates on some cards. For instance, TigerDirect has an MIR that can take the HIS Radeon HD 4870’s price down to $279.99

U.S. average $355.49

As plentiful as Radeon HD 4870s are, Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 260 is even easier to find in stock at resellers. All listed cards at Newegg are available, and average pricing has dipped from $392.49 on July 2 to $355.49 today. Here again, several e-tailers offer fairly substantial mail-in rebates, like Newegg does on this $329.99 eVGA model.

Despite Nvidia’s efforts, the Radeon HD 4870 is still cheaper on average. And as we saw in our benchmarks, the AMD card tends to outdo its Nvidia competitor overall. Of course, both the 4870 and the GTX 260 are incredibly speedy, and it’s hard to go wrong with either one.
