Emulators, Inc. is a company that specializes in making software that allows you to run the Mac OS on Windows machines. Earlier in the week, they have posted a long-winded editorial about Intel’s Pentium 4. Here is the preamble.

The results are in. We’ve completed our benchmarks on the latest Windows Millennium based computers featuring the Intel Pentium 4 processor, the Transmeta Crusoe processor, the AMD Athlon Thunderbird processor, the Pentium III, and others. The results are shocking and disturbing. The Pentium 4 truly is slower than the Athlon and Pentium III in almost all benchmarks! And we’ve figured out why. If you’re thinking of upgrading to the Pentium 4, or have already been tricking into doing so, we have a disturbing report that you must read! Intel is up to their old games again folks, and it spells bad news for the PC industry.

This is a massive piece and not for the faint of heart. It reads more like a dissertation than an opinion piece but you can follow it if you are willing to play along. While there is a good amount of Intel and Pentium 4 bashing (Athlon good, Pentium 4 bad) there is also some good stuff in there (particularly the note about Transmeta). The history of the PC industry is solidly recounted and the author supports his assertions with technical data. Whether you agree with him or not, and I suspect many of you do, this is a worthwhile read heading into the long weekend and New Year.
