Report: Amazon shipped counterfeit Kaveri APUs

Amazon has apparently been conned into selling counterfeit Kaveri APUs. Two customer reviews for the A8-7600 complain about processors with different pin-outs than the expected FM2+ arrangement. According to Overclock 3D, the fake chips are actually Athlon 64 X2 5200+ processors dating back to 2007.

The imposters were marked and boxed as A8-7600 units, so this doesn’t appear to have been a simple shipping snafu. Surprisingly, the bogus APUs were “dispatched from and sold” by Amazon UK rather than by a shady partner. The e-tailer is reportedly hunting down the source.

As far as I can tell, only recent orders were affected. Both complaints come from January 2015, while there are three positive reviews from last year. The problem seems to be limited to Amazon UK, as well. The U.S. listing for the same processor shows 29 happy customers, including a couple from last month.
