Could we see Intel’s low-end Bay Trail processors competing directly with tablet SoCs from Qualcomm and Nvidia? Yes, according to DigiTimes, which says it was tipped off about Intel’s pricing plans by "sources from tablet players."
According to those sources, current Bay Trail-T chips sell for as little as $32, plus 10% off for bulk orders—reportedly not competitive enough with ARM-powered offerings. In the second quarter of next year, however, DigiTimes’ sources expect Intel to offer entry-level Bay Trail models aimed at the Android platform for as little as $15-20.
At those prices, the sources believe Intel will "gain an equal footing against players such as Mediatek, Qualcomm and Nvidia."
If the story is true, then price cuts could help Intel carve itself a bigger slice of the Android device market. I’ll be curious to see if Bay Trail winds up in some of those high-volume, 7" slates like the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire.
