What, you don’t know who SONICblue is? Well, neither did I until I read this article at Internet Stock Report. It turns out that SONICblue is the company formerly known as S3, and as part of their shift from graphics cards into MP3’s, they’ve acquired Empeg.

In case you don’t know (which is pretty much unforgiveable, I might add) Empeg is a UK-based company that makes the sweetest car stereo on the planet. It has laptop hard drives that hold up to 40GB of MP3’s, it runs Linux, and if the company gets the bugs worked out, you’ll soon be able to control it via voice commands. It’s just wicked cool.

The acquisition apparently happened a week or so ago, according to the Empeg site; it’s surprising it didn’t make more news then. At any rate, the Internet Stock Report article goes into some detail about the Empeg and its competition, the Kenwood Z919, and of course the Aiwa CDC-MP3. Personally, I think that the Empeg is sort of in a class of its own, but that’s just me.

It’s gonna be interesting to see what S3…err.. SONICblue’s acquisition will mean for the Empeg player in the long-term. I’m hoping for distribution through Wal-Mart and a $50 price tag. Hey, if you’re gonna dream, dream big. Who’s with me?!? Thanks to Deimos for the link to the ISR article.
